Photo Projects

Well, picture the scene...

You head out to a location after careful planning, you know the spot you need to be, you know the angle you want, you know where you want the light and then you get there.

The clouds are covering everything, there is no light, the weather conditions are working against you in every way possible.

It all just feels flat and uninspiring, just like this picture of a lighthouse.

It's a total bust.

Instead of giving up, think about what else is there.

What else is nearby that not necessarily gets you the perfect picture but fits with a theme that you may have been either consciously or even subconsciously capturing.

For me, it's often textures. It's a common one I'm sure, but I love photographs that you can almost feel just by looking at it.

It's a project that I've been building on for years. One that's always in the back of my head if a shoot isn't delivering.

That way I can always go home with something.

There doesn't need to be a big grand theme, it doesn't need to be something political or dramatic.

Just a theme.

That's it.

Last year I took my camera with me every morning on the way to work. I ended up taking hundreds of shots, the project - Morning Commute.

A street photography project capturing people on their commute. It was often uninteresting, but that's life sometimes.

The more I took, the wider the project got.

Some are commuting, different methods of commuting and some are already hard at work.

The variety that I came across inspired me to not have the project as a fall back, but as a focus to pick up the camera.

Even if I didn't feel like it.

Point is, photo projects are a great incentive to pick the camera up.

So get out there and bring the camera.

Be consistent.

And tag me or send me any projects you've worked on, I love to see it.
